First Sunday:Joint Shogetsu Memorial Service, "Never ‣ Forgotten Service"

Anyone can apply for a funeral service for the deceased. <10:00 a.m. start>

Third Sunday:Thanksgiving service

The lectures are mainly conducted in English, but the lectures are translated into Japanese, so Japanese speakers are also participating. <10:00 a.m. start>

Fourth Sunday:Japanese/Thanks party

Conducted in Japanese only. Please speak in Japanese at tea time after the event. <10:00 a.m. start>

*Regular services start at 10:00 a.m. and end in about an hour. After that, refreshment time is set for about 1 hour. *The schedule may change depending on the month. January's memorial service will be held on the second Sunday.

Closed: Mondays, Tuesdays, national holidays, the 5th Sunday of the year, year-end

Annual Events

Sun Spirit Service /February

On February 11, 1940 Founder Gedatsu Kongo dedicated the Sun Spirit Monument on the grounds of the Gedatsu holy grounds in Japan. The monument – with its large circular sun image at its center and Japanese characters for “spirit” – erected to impress upon the minds of people everywhere the importance of cultivating the spiritual qualities of the sun: selflessness, fairness and endless compassion.

Memorial Service for Ancestors in Ohigan and Obon

Spring and autumn equinoctial week (March/September) and summer Obon (July) are traditional Japanese events to offer prayers and memorial services to our ancestors. We hold a memorial service for the ancestors of each family, the war dead and pioneer victims since ancient times, and various spirits related to Hawaii, where we live today. Also, in August, we hold a memorial service for the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bomb victims and the World War II war dead.

Ryu-jin Service ・June

Water is essential for all life on earth to survive. It is a ceremony to offer prayers of gratitude to the Ryu-jin or the dragon gods, Benzaiten, and water spirit gods who control the water. "Tenjinchigi, or The Supreme Spirit of the Universe," is enshrined in the center of the main shrine of this church. Also enshrined are "Ame-Hachidai Ryu-o-jin" on the left and "Fujisengen-Ryo-Ryu-o-jin" on the right.

Day to give thanks to the founder Gedatsu Kongo /November

November is the month of the birth of the Founder, Gedatsu Kongo, and the month of his passing. At Hawaii Gedatsu Church, we remember the virtues of our founder, and express our gratitude to our Founder, Master Gedatsu Kongo. Then we vow to live a life of gratitude and requital for sake of the people and the world.

We will be holding a "tea party + kimono experience" event in the garden for the purpose of cultural exchange so that you can easily experience Japanese culture. Anyone living in Hawaii or visiting for sightseeing is welcome to participate.

Ogasawara style “Kagume”(Hikime)'ceremony'

The ``Hamame no Gi'' is an important ritual of the Ogasawara school, in which those selected through repeated training demonstrate their skills in front of the shrine and in front of many people. It is a Shinto ritual to purify evil and pray for peace, peace, and prosperity for the family. On that day, Mr. Kiyoshi Ogasawara came and the first ``Homame no Gi'' was held in Hawaii.
